AP Reading List – Book-a-Day: Helen in Egypt

Helen in EgyptAuthor:  HD (Hilda Dolittle)

Category:  Poetry

Overview: If Helen of Troy had never been in Troy, but, instead, was Helen of Egypt; then the myths of those times would be take on a different tone.  They would be Egyptian rather than Greek.  In Helen of Egypt HD rewrites the ancient myths from an Egyptian perspective.

What they’re saying in the Prepwise staff room:

Chris: “HD took the idea of epic poetry, told from the male point of view, and turned into a feminist examination.  Can be tough and bit self-conscious, but interesting.”

Ethan: “While HD has become an icon for many modern groups to champion, Helen in Egypt proves that she was, above all, an excellent poet. HD’s words are more than capable of standing on their own.”
