Technical competency and prior experience are both very important in consulting. One has to ask why would a firm hire a consultant if the consultant does not have any technical competency or experience. That is what a consultant is expected to bring to a position.
Technical competency and prior experience are huge aids and points of reference to employers, but in fact, a knockout interview that displays a knowledge of the company/relevant subject matter and a personality and drive to make things work can beat out someone who has competency in technical aspects and prior experience. Human resources people and executives are people too, names or strong personalities leave an impression. Most businesses want a Tony Stark more than a Reed Richards. Reed might have more technical competency, but Tony has more personality and charisma. You want Reed in engineering not the board room. It is good to be well rounded, but in the end and interview is about putting yourself out there, if you have the drive and the charisma, you can make it work!
