Ask Kate: 670 GMAT score. Which program from career switch to MBA?
HI I have 670 GMAT score and 11 years of Technical experience. Which MBA should I prefer for switching Role
I gave GMAT and got score of 670 and I have 11 years of exp. in IT industry. I started as S/W Engineer and and was later promoted to Project lead and recently started doing project management. I am looking for a career switch to make it to bigger roles like CIO or where I can help transform business using technology.
With 11 years of experience and not yet a C-level, you may want to consider speaking to recruiters before making the EMBA versus MBA decision.
Here’s the main criterion I would use to evaluate your level of Project Management: would a decent team consider you for CIO or next in line to the CIO (or CTO). If decent recruiters say that reputable companies – start-ups if well funded and already shipping product – would consider you, then the EMBA is definitely the best fit. If they say you need 1-2 years more experience, the EMBA is a good fit (but you might want to get those 1-2 years of additional experience). If they say you’re not ready and it will be a while before you are ready, you actually should consider a regular MBA.
If you plan to stay on the more technical side a part time or full time MBA will be fine. Remember though, you aren’t going to school just to go to class and earn marks. You are going to an MBA program to get to know your peers, how your peers process information, and who they will impact. Go to business school to make strategic alliances.
Good luck!
