Ask Kate: 670 GMAT score with 49Q , 32V with 2IR. Retake the GMAT if aiming for US MIS programs?

Hi Kate!

I got 670 in my first attempt at GMAT (49Q, 32V) and got a very low score at IR section-2. I wish to apply for Masters in Information Systems in universities in US. Should I consider retaking the test?

Hi!

Well, good news bad news. I wouldn’t retake just because of the IR. That hurts certainly, but it isn’t going to kill your application. BUT, you have low verbal and low IR which points to potential problems with comprehension or reasoning at fast pace.

For everyone, if you want a great chance at school in the US, you really need to get that verbal score up. V 38 says to schools that you function very well in English and they won’t need to worry about your comprehension/reasoning skills in class.

So . . . since you need to give more effort to verbal anyway, also put a little time into the IR. The good news – once you get your verbal score up, your IR score will likely come up naturally.

Best wishes!
