My son just got accepted to Purdue University (Krannert School of Business) and Fordham University (Gabeli School of Business). Which should he attend and why?
I am assuming you are asking about the undergraduate experiences, NOT the MBA.
Fordham vs Purdue is akin to asking the following questions:
- Exotic city where student can get lost as an anonymous face in the crowd
vs small town (relatively speaking) that centers on the school.
- Massive local network that centers on Finance vs network of operating companies and commodities.
- Commuter school experience vs College town experience.
Fordham is a fine school, but the “college experience” is tangential at best. The network is ok, but don’t expect anyone to come to your aid. Purdue is midwestern. I mean nothing disparaging about that, and on paper they may be able to claim comparable diversity stats, but when you host International Day, you know a school still sees non-doughy-white kids as different. That can actually be an asset, but it can also be uncomfortable.
Without knowing the maturity level of your son, it’s challenging to make a recommendation. In brief, if you want the “College experience” go to Purdue. Both can position you well enough on Wall Street and main street. Published rankings are nothing more than marketing pablum. These schools are comparable.
