There are four steps to becoming a professional engineer. The first step is graduating from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)-accredited four-year college or university program with a degree in engineering. Second, you must pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) written examination. You must then accumulate a certain amount of engineering experience: in most states the requirement is four years, but it is lower in some. Lastly, you must pass the Principles and Practice in Engineering (PE) examination. This will test your knowledge and skills in you chosen engineering discipline (civil, electrical, industrial, mechanical, etc.), as well as engineering ethics.

Specific licensing requirements can vary from state to state. But, basically begin by becoming an intern. You then gain some professional experience, study and take the state’s license exam. If you graduate from an accreditted program, you will then be considered an engineering intern by completed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam. To find out specific licensing requirements per state, you would visit the state’s licensing board.
