What do you think about doing an MBA Online? Is it worth it? What are the benefits and cons?
MBA Online is useful when you have the right perspective. If you are in or hope to get into a VLC – Very Large Company – where the degree serves as a rubber stamp, then any MBA will do and the online MBA is usually much less expensive than a traditional classroom model (though that isn’t always the case!).
If you are hoping to use the degree to open new doors to a new industry or new functional area (for example switching from Engineering to Finance), a more traditional degree program is likely to be better for you. The online MBA does away with the high level of contact among peers and professors. You really miss out on the human element of an MBA when you do it online.
That said, if you just need the degree as a rubber stamp on your resume, it doesn’t matter if you go local or go online so find the best faculty and price to value ratio for you.
I would NOT use an online MBA to break into a new field or functional area. The online programs I know best – even the best ones – are not accepted as peer programs to traditional MBA programs.
