According to the Census Bureau’s 2009 American Community Survey, 24% of women work in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math). Research findings in the US have been mixed regarding the age at which boys and girls become interested in mathematics and science. There are many factors that can contribute to the attitudes and achievement of young women in STEM fields including interaction with mathematics and science teachers, hands-on laboratory experiences, high school achievement in mathematics and science, and resources available at home.
